The best logos are boring on purpose

28 June 2026

Every exciting logo I’ve made has aged badly. Every boring one is still in use five years later, quietly doing its job, never once asking to be noticed.

Excitement is a timestamp

An exciting mark is usually exciting because it’s doing something fashionable: a gradient that was everywhere that year, a shape language borrowed from whatever was trending. That’s precisely what makes it decay: fashion moves on, and the mark ages alongside the trend it borrowed from, whether the business does or not.

Restraint doesn’t photograph well

Restraint doesn’t photograph well in a portfolio. A quiet wordmark next to a generous amount of white space rarely gets the same reaction as something loud and clever, and that’s a real cost to whoever made it. It’s a harder thing to be proud of in the moment.

It performs beautifully in the wild

It performs beautifully in the wild, though, which is the only place that actually counts. Nobody stops to admire their banking app’s logo; they just want it to be unmistakably there, instantly, every single time. Boring, done right, is really just “legible under all conditions”, which turns out to be a much harder brief than “exciting.”
