Shipping fast breaks trust, eventually

9 June 2026

Speed is a great first impression and a terrible long-term strategy. The first fast delivery reads as skill. The third one in a row starts reading as “didn’t look too closely,” whether or not that’s fair.

Why the read changes

Speed signals confidence the first time, because confidence and competence look identical from the outside on a single data point. By the third fast delivery, the client has enough data points to start separating the two, and if the work hasn’t visibly deepened alongside the speed, confidence starts reading as carelessness instead.

The pattern I kept repeating

I noticed I was optimising for the wrong feedback loop: client delight in the moment of delivery, rather than client trust six months later when something needed revisiting. Those aren’t the same metric, and fast work is much better at the first one than the second.

The fix that actually worked

I’ve started building in one deliberately slow pass per project, just to prove the fast ones weren’t the whole story. It’s usually the pass nobody asked for (an extra exploration, a written rationale, a version that gets thrown away), but it’s the thing that gets referenced months later when the client explains to someone else why they trust the work.
