The written brief says “modern, trustworthy, a little playful.” The real brief is usually something closer to “our last three attempts at this made the founder wince.”
Reading between the lines
Every brief has a shadow version underneath it: the actual constraint nobody wrote down because it felt too personal, too political, or too obvious to state. Usually it surfaces about forty minutes into the first call, almost as an aside, and it’s the single most useful sentence in the entire project.
Learning to listen for that sentence, rather than the polished paragraph that precedes it, is most of what “experience” means in this job.
Why it takes longer
Getting to the real brief takes longer than the kickoff call allows, which is exactly why it’s worth the extra week. A brief written in one sitting reflects whatever the client was most recently anxious about. A brief revisited a week later, after they’ve had time to react to a first draft, reflects what they actually meant.
A small trick that helps
I’ve started asking clients to describe the LAST version that didn’t work, in detail, before we talk about what should replace it. It reliably surfaces the real brief faster than asking what they want, because people are much better at articulating what they’re reacting against than what they’re hoping for.
